for Windows 98/ME/2k/XP

I have Windows XP Service Pack 1 (or 2) installed on my computer.
Vebwiev won't work!!! Bah. Crap.
Ans : Step 1 : Make sure to
download this zip file. After downloading the zip file, unzip it to obtain a single Registry (.reg) File. Merge this file into the registry (Right click the file in explorer and select "Merge")*. Step 2 : During Installation (through readme.html) allow any popup warnings regarding blocked content and/or activeX controls. Clicking on 'No' on any of these messages can cause the installation to fail.

custom webviews may be made active

XP and Windows Server 2003. For more

I have Windows XP. When I customize a folder with Vebwiev, everything appears to go smooth and the customized folder opens up in explorer. But the folder still shows the same default webview that comes with Windows XP!!
Ans : Step 1 : Make sure to
download this zip file. After downloading the zip file, unzip it to obtain a single Registry (.reg) File. Merge this file into the registry (Right click the file in explorer and select "Merge")*. Step 2 : Right click in the concerned folder and select "Customise this folder...". On the "Customize" tab, under "Use this folder type as a template" drop down list, select "Use existing customization template".

I have Windows 2000 SP3 installed on my computer.
Vebwiev won't work!!! Bah. Crap.
Ans : Make sure to
download this zip file. After downloading the zip file, unzip it to obtain a single Registry (.reg) File. Merge this file into the registry (Right click the file in explorer and select "Merge").
In the
remote case that merging this registry
file fails to revive the webview,
please follow the steps in the
following workaround.
Workaround for Windows 2000 with Service Pack 3 installed :
The following is a step by
step method to set Vebwiev for
all folders. Submitted by
Julian Becker.
- Install
Vebwiev regularly using the "Install"
button in Readme.html.
- Then use the standard procedure to
customize a folder, using the Folder
Customization wizard. Choose Vebview
from the list of installed webviews
while customizing and check the "Edit"
Box.
- Then add a break at the beginning of
the file and remove it again (so that
no changes are made).
- Save the file and continue the
folder editing to finish the
customization process.
- Now the folder you have chosen has
Vebview applied to it.
- Copy all files from the subfolder
"Folder Settings" (hidden folder) to %SYSTEMROOT%\Web
(where %SYSTEMROOT% means the path to
the folder where Windows has been
installed). Customizing a single
folder with Vebwiev, somehow seems to
"sign" the code.
- Navigate to %SYSTEMROOT%\Web and
rename folder.htt to folderold.htt.
- In the same folder (%SYSTEMROOT%\Web)
rename the file named vebwiev.htt to
folder.htt.
- Refresh Explorer!!

I also have Norton Antivirus
installed on my computer. Each time I
open up a explorer window, Norton says
that a malicious script is being
executed. How do I disable this? Are
you sure Vebwiev is safe?
Ans : Disable a) Scripts
monitoring and b) Activex monitoring
in Norton Antivirus. Ofcourse, some
people might consider this a security
lapse. Suit yourself on this issue.
Vebwiev does not try anything funny
with your system or crucial files. It
is basically a pretty innocuous piece
of software. Another solution could be
to uninstall NAV (yeah, sure).

I can't seem to be able to edit
the mp3 tags / save the text files
on-the-fly. I am getting an error :
"Run-time error
Do you want to debug?
Line 341
Error: 'sAttributes' it is null or it
is not an object"
Ans : If you are running a non-English version of Windows and are
using the Vebwiev English
installation, you may receive this
error. Spanish and French versions of
Vebwiev are available on the homepage
in the download section. downloading
these should solve the problem.
If you are running a version of
windows other than English, Spanish or
French, you can drop me a mail at
this address, so
that we can work on a solution. If the
above solutions do not work, the mp3
activex control might not be properly
installed. See next faq. Also
if you are running the English edition
of Windows, download
this
.reg file and merge it into the
registry (Win 9x/ME only). That should
solve the problem.
-
I cannot see mp3 id3 tag
information or zip file information in
the webview pane when a mp3 file / zip
file is selected.
Ans : This most probably means
that the activex controls that are
bundled with vebwiev have not been
registered. There are 4 activex
controls (in the form of dlls) that
are distributed with vebwiev. They are
Alfafish EzyID3 2.6.dll, SAWZip.dll,
zlib.dll and Util2.dll. These 4
controls should be present in
\windows\web\controls once any of the
buttons in the readme.html file have
been used. To register
these controls run the following
command at the commandline :
regsvr32.exe <activex control path here>
Please note that
zlib.dll DOES NOT need to be
registered.
-
A dialog box asking me whether
"An ActiveX control is safe to run"
pops up each time I refresh windows
explorer.
Ans : Restart your computer.
(Logging off and logging on again also
seems to solve the problem in some
cases.) This should solve the problem.
If this does not work, change the
values of the following registry keys
to 0 (zero).
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\Zones\0\1200
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\Zones\0\1201
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\Zones\0\1200
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\Zones\0\1201
If the problem persists even after
this or you are not comfortable
handling the registry, email me at
this address.

I want to modify Vebwiev / use
some code from vebwiev.
Ans : Yep, just go ahead. Vebwiev
is freeware and the code is pretty
much open for anyone to hack. You can modify it as
much as you want it. If you do come up
with something great, I sure would
like to see it. Also, I won't mind if
you use my work and give a crumb size
credit. Although the HTML and
scripting code that is part of Vebwiev
is open-source, the activex controls
that are bundled with Vebwiev are not
and you might need permission from the
author if you want to use them.
-
I can't see the "attributes"
link as it appears in the vebwiev pane
in some of your screenshots.
Ans : Download
this
.reg file and merge it into the
registry (Win 9x/ME only). That should
solve the problem.

The skin selector is grayed out /disabled. I can't select the other skins. All I can use is the default skin.
OR I can't see the gradients in the webview.
Ans : To be able to use the other skins / see the gradients you need Internet Explorer 5.5 or greater. If you have Internet Explorer 5.5 or greater and are still facing this problem it most probably means that Internet Explorer has not been properly installed on your machine or that a "Full" installation was not performed while installing Internet Explorer. The solution is to re-install Internet Explorer if you already have IE 5.5 or greater, OR, upgrade to IE 5.5 or greater if you have Internet Explorer 5 or below(!)

[ Windows 98 ] Even when Vebwiev has been succesfully installed as the default vebwiev and webview has been enabled in explorer, when I navigate to the next folder, vebwiev disappears. I have to select "View as web page" once again.
Ans : To solve the problem, open up Folder options, on the 'General' tab, click the 'Settings' button. There select the option 'For all folders with HTML content'. Alternatively, open up any folder, set it to vebiwev through "View as Web page", hold down CTRL + SHIFT, close the window. The Settings should be saved now. Check q237865 from MSKB.

Your FAQ doesn't address my query/ I have done everything on your FAQ page, but still can't get anywhere.
Ans : If all fails, drop me a mail here.
